He was formerly the editor of Harper\u2019s and The New Republic and was a founding editor of Slate.<\/p>\n<p itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-para-count=\"147\" data-total-count=\"723\">He has written columns for Time, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, The Atlantic, Politico and Bloomberg View, among other publications.<\/p>\n<p itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-para-count=\"122\" data-total-count=\"845\">\u201cIn my world, Michael is the gold standard of thoughtful journalism,\u201d said Graydon Carter, the editor of Vanity Fair.<\/p>\n<p itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-para-count=\"149\" data-total-count=\"994\">Mr. Carter said he tried unsuccessfully to hire Mr. Kinsley shortly after taking the helm in 1992. \u201cWe play a long game at Vanity Fair,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-para-count=\"144\" data-total-count=\"1138\">Vanity Fair had a circulation of 1.2 million, according to the most recent figures from the Alliance for Audited Media, for first half of 2013.<\/p>\n<p itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-para-count=\"202\" data-total-count=\"1340\">Its newsstand sales slumped roughly in line with those of its peers surveyed by the alliance during the period, by 11 percent, though a digital replica circulation of 75,000 perhaps offset that figure.<\/p>\n<p itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-para-count=\"111\" data-total-count=\"1451\">The magazine lost one of its columnists and contributing editors, Christopher Hitchens, who died in late 2011.<\/p>\n<p itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-para-count=\"131\" data-total-count=\"1582\">\u201cI couldn\u2019t fill Christopher Hitchens\u2019 shoes,\u201d Mr. Kinsley said, \u201cbut maybe I\u2019m filling his head count or something.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Michael Kinsley\u00a0will join Vanity Fair as a contributing editor, stepping down as editor at large of The New Republic, and leaving its masthead for the first time since 1976.
